I got my California State Contractor’s License since my last home page update. My friends kept telling me they wished people in construction would be as honorable as I try to be in the equine industry. You know I listen to everyone. As long as I’ve been in business (‘bout 40 years in three countries), I’ve learned to respect everyone’s opinion. Yes, the longer you are in an industry, the more likely it is something unusual will pop up but I judge people on how they handle it and if they do the right thing. That’s probably why you are reading this right now and shaking you head up and down. So, two new things are happening….my primary profession (where I make real money, not horse money), has changed and I will talk more about that a little later. AND, most important, I am leasing horses for the first time in 35years!! It is so win, win…I can’t believe the industry is just now sorting it out to be beneficial to the Owners and their Trainers. I don’t mean to go on-and-on but you know the only bonus these folks get is when they help you get a new horse (usually because you ride better than the old one, usually thanks to the Trainer). Unfortunately, as time goes on, in the upper riding levels, you may not continue to click with a mount forever. Compare the difference in a person’s first marriage and the marriage they stay in (enough said). Not a problem when you are buying $8k trail horses, huge problem with upper level athletes. Why am I being so honest? Easy, you know I have culled about five future Gr Prix horses out of fields of baby 2 and 3yr olds. I’m not alone. I have three or four Trainers locally in SoCal that have done the same thing(some of the same horses, too.) So what happens when the ‘match’ is not there? Two incredible athletes end up with a relationship that isn’t working to the best of their abilities. The world stops until they have a new owner and a new pet is found. Depending on the market, athleticism, and price…this can take several months to best part of a year. Buying is still ideal. IF you know what you want to do over a long period of time, I’d say over the span of a year. I always jokingly told people to buy the horse they’ll want in 8 months. I find this to be more true as cost to KEEP the athlete becomes an issue. The majority of the expenses for a lease are identical to owning, minus the initial cost. Parameters are Trainer, board, shoes, vet, insurance, nummies, love, respect, basically the same plus the lease fee which is (depending on the horse, so don’t put me up against the wall if I’m off a little) approximately half the value of the athlete spread over the year. Yeah, very good deal. So, if you like this idea and want to buy, lease, or become one of the investors…more on this later, contact me. Yes, if I was leasing a horse for a year and it looked like it had Gr Prix potential and that’s what I was going for…I’d buy. Investors will have their choice of the available horses to lease. The horse ‘Jack’ on the Sales List is the first one and he’s got brothers and sisters. Some are bigger, some a little smaller, some younger, but very typey; foundation lines, some are not as far along training-wise. This is the sign of the future. Remember what I said, if you know what you want, WILL want, and you have someone like me to help you purchase, buy. This is a good thing and I am excited to help you with this. Warmest regards, Louisa Allyn |
